AI is moving from buzzword to working tool in the MICE space. It powers attendee matchmaking, content recommendations, lead scoring for exhibitors, and even AI-generated session summaries. Reporting on India’s exhibition sector notes that organisers are increasingly using AI for lead generation, matchmaking, and ROI tracking, particularly for large industry-specific expos in pharmaceuticals, agri-tech, and renewable energy.

India’s positioning as a global MICE destination is closely tied to digital readiness. The Ministry of Tourism launched the National Strategy for the MICE industry in 2022 and formed the India MICE Board to coordinate growth efforts. According to government communications, India’s exhibition industry has grown by 40 per cent post-Covid, with business generated through exhibitions reaching substantial figures.
State-of-the-art venues like Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, India Expo Centre in Greater Noida, and BIEC in Bengaluru are built around modern ICT infrastructure – high-density Wi-Fi, integrated AV systems, smart access control, and digital wayfinding. The introduction of E-Conference Visas with processing under 48 hours has also removed a major friction point for international delegates.
Skills the next generation of MICE professionals need
The shift toward ICT-driven events has changed what employers look for. Soft skills like communication and crisis management still matter, but they sit alongside hard digital skills. Academic research on MICE employability highlights that graduates need both management knowledge and ICT operational skills to meet rising industry demand, with proficiencies in communication, innovation, project implementation, and operations management ranked as critical.
For students, this means getting comfortable with at least one event management platform, understanding the basics of livestreaming and AV setup, learning how to read engagement analytics, and staying curious about emerging tools like AI matchmaking and VR walkthroughs.
Challenges and limits of ICT in MICE
Technology is not a magic wand. Hybrid events face real engagement challenges – keeping a remote viewer attentive is harder than holding the room in person. Connectivity issues at venues can derail a session in seconds. Cybersecurity risks rise as more attendee data flows through digital platforms. Smaller event organisers may struggle with the cost of premium event-tech subscriptions.
The human element also matters. No piece of software can replace the spontaneous corridor conversation that turns into a partnership, or the warm handshake that closes a deal. The smartest MICE professionals use ICT to amplify human connection, not replace it.
